So Many Little Deaths

by Peter Baltensperger

In one of our dreams
we grasp the night
on a beach
our limbs entwined

listening to distant voices
shifting sand

our world
a pair of pliant breasts
a trembling sword
an expectant sheath

wolves howling
somewhere beyond the dunes

we fuck
the stars from the sky
scream our metaphors
into the dark

waiting for the moon

and afterwards
our souls limp
in the restless sand

clutching at the only thing
we know
